A rare Modernist-style Navajo silver cuff

bracelet by Ivan Kee, circa 1950’s

A marvelous and beautifully-crafted cuff bracelet by the renowned Navajo silversmith, Ivan Kee. Along with his accomplished silversmith brothers, Allan and George, Ivan perfected his silver artistry in the 1940’s and 1950’s working as apprentice to and colleague of his older cousin, the brilliant master Navajo silversmith, Kenneth Begay, who was widely known as “the Father of Modern Navajo jewelry.”

Of the three Kee brothers, Ivan was, by far, the least prolific and his work is considerably harder to find. This beautiful bracelet uses a variation of the Hopi “overlay” style of silver work in which one layer of silver is placed over another utilizing cutouts to accentuate designs and provide contrast. The bracelet has what appears to be a stylized Hopi kachina face design utilizing elements on the mask of the Hopi Havasupai kachina. This makes for a very interesting cross-cultural phenomenon: A Navajo bracelet, made using the Hopi “overlay” style of silverwork and depicting an abstracted image of a Hopi kachina which is itself based on the appearance of a Havasupai Indian.

This unique bracelet has a maximum width of 1 ¼”. The inner circumference measures 5 3/4” with a 1 1/8” gap between terminals for a total bracelet circumference of 6 7/8”.  The bracelet weighs 64.1 grams or 2.26 ounces. The bracelet is in excellent original condition and is properly signed “IK” on the interior.
